Colombian diver Orlando Duque gave a wonderful performance in front of the Statue of Liberty on Monday, when the renown diver plunged in front of the famous landmark. The 38-year-old completed a beautifully executed 75-foot tuck dive from a helicopter to promote the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Orlando Duque's plunge ended with a successful dive into the New York harbor at a speed of, according to reports, 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour).
The entire dive was a high-pressure moment, as the Colombian diver had one chance to successfully perform the dive. But the dive was no task for Orlando Duque, who holds two Guinness world records and a gold medal in diving from the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. "It's really exciting to get such a warm welcome back to the U.S.. It doesn't get any better than diving in front of something as iconic as the Statue of Liberty. It's beyond what I ever could have imagined," said Duque.
"The Colombian started out in swimming pools but quickly became tired of the regimented scene," reads his bio for Red Bull. "Diving off cliffs seemed more of a challenge. A natural if ever there was one, Orlando has nine world championship titles and two Red Bull Cliff Diving crowns to his name and counting. He has also been immortalised in the film 9 Dives which includes the highest jump of his career to date - a 34-metre descent off a bridge in Italy. Duque also made it into the Guinness Book of World Records when he achieved a perfect 10 at the 2000 world championships."
The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series will be held on Sunday in Boston and will feature 14 divers -- including Michigan's David Colturi, Florida's Steven LoBue, California's Kent De Mond, Indiana's Kyle Mitrione and Andy Jones of Las Vegas -- that will dive off the 90-foot-high Institute of Contemporary Art on Fan Pier. The ten-time world champion will be traveling to Boston for the competition, which will be his fifth stop for the promotional event.
