The masked gunman who opened fire on a crowded Oregon mall Tuesday killing two others and then himself in a shooting rampage has been identified as 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts, the Huffington Post reported. The rifle Roberts used was reportedly stolen from someone he knew, said the Post.

"I can confirm the shooter is dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound," Lt. James Rhodes of the Clackamas County, Ore., Sheriff's Department said today. "By all accounts there were no rounds fired by law enforcement today in the mall."

Roberts entered the 1.4 million square-foot Clackamas Town Center mall through a Macy's department store wearing a white hockey mask and a bulletproof vest, armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle with several fully loaded magazines of ammo, police said. He reportedly ran through the upper level of Macy's and began firing multiple shots, one right after another near the food court, according to witnesses.

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said the rifle jammed during the attack, but Roberts managed to get it working again, and later shot himself. Authorities don't yet have a motive, but don't believe he was targeting specific people.

Roberts fatally shot two people - 45-year-old Steven Mathew Forsyth, and 54-year-old Cindy Ann Yuille - and wounded another, Kristina Shevchenko, who is currently in serious condition, according to authorities.

"He looked like a teenager wearing a gun, like a bullet-proof vest and he had a machine, like an assault rifle and a white mask and he looked at me," eyewitness Amber Tate said, reported ABC News.

Witnesses reportedly heard Roberts saying, "I am the shooter," as he fired rounds inside the popular suburban mall several miles from downtown Portland.

According to witness reports Roberts was described as looking like he was on a mission and determined, "looking straight ahead."

Police Chief Roberts said people in the mall acted heroically when they were surprised by the outburst of violence.

"This could have been much, much worse," Roberts said.

Little is known of Roberts at the time, but authorities confirm he rented a small basement room in an average, single-story Portland home, where he hadn't lived very long, according to neighbor Bobbi Bates.

According to Bates, Roberts left around 1:30 p.m. wearing a dark jacket and jeans, and carrying a guitar case. A resident of the home where Roberts lived declined to comment, according to ABC News.

Jason DeCosta, a manager of a window-tinting company, says he heard the shots as he was arriving to relieve another co-worker. DeCosta then ran up an escalator past those ducking for cover.

"I figure if he's shooting a gun, he's gonna run out of bullets," DeCosta said, "and I'm gonna take him."

However, by the time DeCosta reached the food court it was too late. "I saw a gentleman face down, obviously shot in the head," Decosta said. "A lot of blood. You could tell there was nothing you could do for him," he added.

He says he also saw a woman on the floor who had been shot in the chest.

Another witness, 20-year-old Austin Patty who works at Macy's, said he saw a man in a white mask carrying a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest enter the store. He says there was a series of rapid-fire gunshots as Christmas music played.
