Border security operation rescues 91 migrants and identifies 33 stash houses in New Mexico

A coordinated 12-day effort led by New Mexico law enforcement agencies, dubbed "Operation Disruption," has resulted in the rescue of 91 human trafficking survivors and 16 arrests in New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced.

"Operation Disruption is a clear demonstration of our commitment to saving lives and protecting the most vulnerable among us," Lujan Grisham said. "Thanks to the tireless efforts of our law enforcement partners, we have made our communities safer and sent a strong message to those who seek to exploit others."

The multi-agency operation, conducted between Aug. 17 and Aug. 29, focused on Dona Ana and Luna Counties and involved the New Mexico State Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as well as other local and federal agencies.

According to the governor's office, the operation resulted in:

• 91 rescues
• 33 stash houses identified
• 735 traffic stops
• 16 arrests

Among those rescued were nine individuals found in the desert, including a woman in a life-threatening condition who is currently recovering.

Lujan Grisham emphasized that the operation sends a strong warning to those involved in human trafficking. "Let this be a warning to those who would traffic in human lives: New Mexico will not tolerate this reprehensible criminal behavior. We are coming after you, and when we find you, we will shut down your illegal operation and put you in jail," she said.

The U.S. Border Patrol has reported a sharp incline in stash house raids during the last five years. In FY 2020 the agency recorded a total of 66 such raids. In 2023 this number rapidly went up to 280. Suspicious activity related to human trafficking can be reported to Customs and Border Protection at 1-866-347-2423 or through an online tip form. Victims of human trafficking can receive support from the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
