Sam Altman has reversed his stance on Donald Trump, expressing newfound support for the president's leadership following a $500 billion AI investment deal, Stargate, that OpenAI is a key partner in.
Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, has historically been critical of Trump, describing his rhetoric as dangerous during the 2016 election and supporting Democratic efforts to oppose him.
However, as Trump announced his ambitious Stargate project to cement U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence, Altman's company became a significant player in the initiative, Fortune reported.
The project involves major tech firms, including OpenAI, Microsoft and SoftBank, with Trump touting it as a strategic national investment.
In a post on X, Altman shared that his perspective on Trump had shifted after observing his recent actions, stating he believes Trump "will be incredible" moving forward.
"Watching @potus more carefully recently has really changed my perspective on him. I wish I had done more of my own thinking and definitely fell in the npc [non-playable character] trap. I'm not going to agree with him on everything, but I think he will be incredible for the country in many ways," Altman wrote on X.
This shift comes amid criticism from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has a history of clashes with Altman, accusing him of prioritizing profit over principles.
The Stargate initiative, which includes a planned $500 billion investment over four years, has sparked public disputes between Altman, Musk and other tech leaders about its feasibility and funding sources.
While Altman defends the project as critical for U.S. innovation, Musk has questioned SoftBank's financial commitment and attacked Altman's motives.
As Stargate gains traction, the project is set to begin building data centers in Texas, with Altman and other tech leaders working to solidify the partnership's credibility.
The Stargate initiative's success will depend on whether the participating companies can deliver on their promises and overcome financial and operational hurdles.
