A home that caught fire in Holliston ended up tragic with reports that a woman died trying to save her dogs Monday night. The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. and the woman had initially got out. However, she ran back to save back more than 12 dogs from the burning structure.

The effort proved futile. Aside from the female casualty, all the dogs perished in the fire. According to a report from the Milford Daily News, the couple was identified as Allan Levine and Ronda Levine of 623 Winter St.

The husband was taken to a local hospital but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The couple had no kids and the dogs meant so much to the woman who perished said one neighbor.

According to Kevin Swanecamp, he was watching TV when he heard dogs barking like crazy. When he checked, he saw smoke and flames which appeared to have started at the left portion of the house.

Swanecamp added that he did see the couple come out of the burning house. However, the woman went back in to save the dogs.

“They had no kids. Her life was her dogs,” he said. “That was her.”

The husband is reportedly in his late 80s while the deceased woman was in her mid-70s. According to Swanecamp, the elder couple ran a courier service. The woman also had a part-time job at Home Depot but stressed that the dogs were her passion.

Holliston Deputy Fire Chief Mark Dellicker added that several dogs were caged and rescue workers tried to resuscitate those that were pulled out of the fire.

Further, the Holliston Town Clerk’s Office revealed that the couple had a permit to run a kennel in their residence. 10-plus dogs were allowed on the property. This meant they could have as much as 22 in their home. Per records, there were 19 dogs in the Levine’s home but it appears there were 20 based on the report of the Fire Marshall’s Office.
