AnOhio mother is demanding to know why her 11-year-old son's school allegedly failed to call emergency services after he was beaten unconscious by another student, according to a report.
The attack took place about one week after the victim started attending Eastland Performance Academy in Columbus, Ohio, on October 8.
Katt Johnson says her son was talking to a friend when he was suddenly assaulted by another student, who choked him, threw him into a window, and slammed his head onto a desk, NBC 4 reported. The assault left the boy unresponsive and resulted in serious injuries, including a skull fracture, ruptured eardrum, and multiple bruises.
When Johnson arrived at the school, she was in disbelief about the condition her son was in. She discovered that staff members had yet to notify police or call for emergency medical help, despite her son's severe state. Johnson alleges that a teacher saw the tail end of the incident happen inside her classroom, but seemingly failed to notice it until it was too late.
"She didn't notice my son being picked up by his throat and punched in the head repeatedly, she didn't notice my son being thrown into a window repeatedly, she didn't notice my son's head being slammed off of a desk repeatedly," Johnson said, according to WBNS TV.
Johnson reports that she had to request medical help multiple times before anyone lended a helping hand.
"Not only did I have to tell them twice to call an ambulance, the school never called the police," Johnson said, according to the NBC affiliate. "That is also suspicious to me, especially considering the fact at how brutally my son was assaulted and no one stopped it."
Once her son was transported to a hospital, Johnson also contacted a social worker to involve the authorities.
Meanwhile, the school claims it was cooperating with law enforcement and is undergoing an internal investigation. Despite this, Johnson is frustrated with the response, prompting her to press charges against the student involved. She is also demanding the school take accountability for its failure to protect her son.
"I don't understand how you can be standing 10 feet away and not notice such a severe assault happening," Johnson said. "There are other things that she could have done to protect my child that she did not do, and it's unacceptable."
Moving forward, Johnson plans to homeschool her son as he recovers, citing the trauma experienced by the assault.
The attack is currently being investigated as a felonious assault by the Columbus Police Department.
