An Ohio funeral home has become the first such institution in the state to apply for a liquor license, attempting to alter the way mourners experience funerals.
Evergreen Funeral Cremation and Reception applied for a liquor license ahead of their scheduled opening next year. They intend to serve mourners alcoholic beverages at events they host.
The owners of the funeral home see this as a positive development, sharing that they hope to change the way people view funerals and the experience associated with such events into more of a celebration of life, according to WSYX.
"My role in this position is to kind of be a party planner for the dead. Be more of a celebration of life than more of the multi-day traditional services, which cost a lot of money," Hunter Triplett, one of the owners, told WSYX.
"We will only be serving alcohol when people are on this premises and remain on the premises until the continuation of the services just for the safety of the people in the community around," Triplett continued.
The permit requests a D3 license for the business which would allow them to serve beer, wine and hard liquor, according to the Ohio Liquor Control website.
The funeral home also offer a range of services for families or loved ones seeking them, including translated services to accommodate people of other cultures. Triplett also intends to make funeral packages being offered at Evergreen more cost-efficient.
"It's kind of like a one-stop shop for funeral service. The package being around $5,000-$6,000, contrary to the national average, which can be upwards of $10,000," he told the outlet.
