In a string of social media posts that he doesn't recall writing, a veteran Ohio Sheriff's Lieutenant stated that he would withhold aid from Democrats.
Lt. John Rodgers was given a written reprimand for his conduct after posting a variety of statements on Facebook, stating that he would refuse to assist a distressed individual if they supported the Democratic party.
"At the end of the day I will require proof of who you voted for if you ask me for help. Weapons and ammo are not cheap," he wrote on social media.
"I am sorry. If you support the Democrat party I will not help you," he said in another post.
Rodgers stated that he did not recall writing the posts, and that they may have been the result of a sleep aid he had been taking that caused him to make unusual statements as a side effect. He has since stopped taking the medication, reported the Springfield News-Sun.
Rodgers further alleged that the first time he had consciously seen the posts he'd made was in a meeting with Major Scott Cultice.
"I was taken aback when I read those messages and do not have those, nor have I ever had feelings toward anyone like what was depicted in the posts," Rodgers wrote. "I have served this community, this County and the State for the last 31 years serving as a firefighter, campus policy officer and a Sheriff's Deputy. There is no other job that [I] would want to be doing than the one that [I] am currently at."
"I know I cannot apologize enough, and my apologies may seem empty, but I will continue to apologize as long as necessary," Rodgers continued.
Chief Deputy Mike Young stated that Rodgers' sentiments did not represent the Clark County Sheriff's Office in a statement.
"We've been in this battle over the last few months, with the attacks on the Haitian community and other immigrants, and we protect people's rights and we don't support the conduct to the contrary," Young said. "I can't go back in time and take that post away; the lieutenant made the post and he has received consequences for that."
