Eight years after it aired in March 2005, "The Office," the American spin on the original British comedy series, is coming to an emotional close.
The finale of the beloved mockumentary-style television program will air tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC, Business Insider reports.
The farewell episode already began toying with the emotions of its some 8 million viewers when Steve Carrell announced that he would not return for the reunion-style finale. Carrell's character, bumbling boss Michael Scott, departed the show in its 7th season, cutting viewership and ratings.
In case you need a refresher course before pulling out your tissues tonight, here's some things to remember about this season, thanks to Entertainment Weekly:
1. Jim and Pam have been having relationship issues and have enlisted the help of a marriage counselor. Hearts broke when Jim and Pam, the show's star couple, were on the rocks and needed help fixing their marriage. Things are looking up, though, as Jim has charmed fans with a series of romantic gestures, including enlisting the help of the camera crew, to remind Pam of how much he means to him. The couple's notable mastery of communication is also starting to peek through again.
2. Andy, who replaced Michael as manager when he left, is an actor now. He left Dunder Mifflin this season to pursue his longtime dream of being an actor. The Cornell grad isn't exactly having the time of his life, only scoring a gig in a science education video thanks to his agent, played by Roseanne Barr. It looks like maybe he will return to sales if things don't shape up soon.
3. Erin is in a love triangle with Andy and new employee Pete. She is currently dating Pete, but viewers might get some new info on the trio considering the finale takes place six months after the documentary the staff had been involved in all this time aired.
4. Dwight has finally reached his goal of becoming Regional Manager. It may have taken him the entirety of the show, but Dwight is finally living the dream. He has since named Jim as his assistant after he turned down an opportunity with his sports company he's been working for part-time in order to be with Pam.
5. Angela and Dwight are getting married. After Angela's big and powerful state-senator husband came out as gay -- and as Oscar's boyfriend -- she found herself needing someone to help her up. She had a baby not too long after, which was said to be that of ex-husband Robert. Dwight confessed that he was willing to help her raise this child because she was "the one." Turns out, the boy was Dwight's all along. The two have lived in creepy harmony ever since.
The finale was originally set to run for one hour, but producers tacked on 15 extra minutes to the reunion, cutting into Hannibal's slot time. But who's complaining? It's "The Office," after all -- NBC's gem, which was the fodder for a variety of similar shows springing up in recent years from "Community" to "Parks and Recreation."
NBC promised laughs, tears and closure tonight in a release it issued earlier about the finale's storyline.
"Months after the airing of the documentary, the workers of Dunder Mifflin, past and present, gather for a wedding and a final round of interviews. Mysteries are solved, hatchets are buried, pranks are prunked," the release said.
