The President of the United States of America is going to be making history tomorrow night and the "Big 4" will not be covering the action. President Barack Obama is set to present his plan to overhaul immigration during primetime but none of the English-language networks will be airing the speech on their networks, instead relegating them to cable their cable networks and online portals. Only Univision and Telemundo will be airing the speech live and as it happens directly from the White House. The speech starts at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT and LatinTimes will have complete coverage of the POTUS' plan as it is revealed.
Univision was in a pickle as Obama's speech will cut into their coverage of the 15th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. The Spanish-language network will start their red carpet coverage of the event as normal, at 7pm ET and cut into the speech at 8pm ET. After Obama's presentation, the network plans to air the award ceremony as planned with coverage and in-depth analysis scheduled the next morning on "Despierta América" starting at 7am ET/PT. Rival network Telemundo will pre-empt their telenovela "Reina de Corazones" to cut into the live feed from the White House and hear Obama's plan for immigration reform that Hispanics living in the U.S. are concerned about.
What is sad about this whole situation is that Latinos are a growing population in the U.S., yet the networks still see us as unimportant. In any other President's speech, they would have cut into their programming, but because we're in the middle of November sweeps, their ratings are much more important than whatever plan Obama has. What is this "Viva Today" crossover where NBC's "Today" show cross promotes with Telemundo's "Un Nuevo Día" or ABC's "Good Morning America" crosses over with Univision's "Despierta América?" The networks address that Latinos are important, but yet are not showing that they want to cater to that audience. So enjoy "The Big Bang Theory" on CBS, "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC, "The Biggest Loser" on NBC and whatever flopping show FOX has on at the same time. We will be tuning in to our Hispanic networks. Thank you!
