Shocking video footage released by the New York Post shows the moment a 28-year-old NYC subway passenger died after falling headfirst on concrete while attempting to jump over a subway turnstile.
The tragedy occurred at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue train station in Queens at about 6.45 am local time on Sunday, Jan. 2.
In the sickening surveillance video, Christopher De La Cruz is seen entering the subway station carrying a black backpack. He drops his phone during his initial attempt to get over the turnstile.
He then attempts to jump over the turnstile several times but fails repeatedly before losing his balance and falling headfirst onto the concrete floor, breaking his neck.
He was reportedly on his way to work and it seems like he was "attempting to evade" paying the $2.75 fee, a police spokesman told the news outlet.
According to the police, Christopher was "unresponsive" when they reached the subway station. Emergency responders pronounced him dead on the scene.
"What can I say? He made a mistake," Christopher's father, Jose De La Cruz, told the Daily Mail.
The video has gone viral on the internet and netizens have been paying their tributes to Christopher.
"That’s a horrible way to die. RIP," one person wrote on Twitter.
"Make the subway free. There’s enough money in this city to make that happen. RIP," another tweeted.
A third person wrote: "The way that man died trying to jump that rail to get on the subway is sooo sad."
"Let’s help each other out more. RIP to this person, the subway should be free anyway," tweeted another.
A similar tragedy occurred early Saturday at a Bronx subway station. A 36-year-old unidentified man who was on the roadbed at the Fordham Road subway station was fatally struck by a subway train, police said.
"The operator of the train tried to stop as the man tried to climb back on the platform and he was struck by the train," an NYPD spokesman told the NY Post.
First responders declared the victim dead on the scene, cops said. It remains unclear why the man was on the tracks, the police added.
