May 12 marks the annually celebrated holiday that honors nurses and the integral care they provide for our healthcare system and patients. The day was initially created to raise awareness of the important role nurses to play in society by “advocating, leading and caring,” which also serves as the slogan of the American Nursing Association. May 6 is the beginning of National Nurses Week, a week-long celebration that comes to a close on May 12, which serves as International Nurses Day and is also Florence Nightingale's birthday. Nightingale is an English nurse who has been credited with being the founder of professional nursing. Her rise in nursing popularity is especially due to her innovative work during the Crimean War in 1854.
The long-standing tradition of National Nurses Week began in October of 1954, the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s work in Crimea. National Nurses Day was introduced as the date for the observance in 1982. In celebration of this momentous day, Latin Times has compiled 12 inspirational quotes that remind nurses, and others alike, of the importance of the work done by nurses and dedication, found within the workers of the nursing field.
