The football rivalry between the University of Notre Dame and the University of Southern California began in 1926. A long history that includes legendary players such as Knute Rockne, Anthony Davis, Joe Thiesmann and Carson Palmer, the two programs have enjoyed their fair share of success in the annual contest, helping to solidify the game as one of the top rivalries in all of sports. Notre Dame holds the all-time series edge with a record of 44-35-5 and as they look to make it two-straight victories over their biggest rival, the Irish and head coach Brian Kelly plan on providing the fans in attendance at Notre Dame Stadium plenty to cheer about in what will be only the second night game in University history.
"We go through the season and so many weeks, it's on the other side," Irish coach Brian Kelly said regarding the major match-ups Notre Dame plays on a weekly basis. "In other words, it's other teams really calling it their rivalry game. Our players would be the first ones to admit that this is our rivalry game, one week that we look forward to. Our goals are pretty clear. We want to win every game that we play the rest of the season, and wherever that takes us at the end of the season, we'll be excited about that. We want to beat USC. Those are really our goals."
Set to host a USC team that recently fired head coach B, Notre Dame (4-2 overall) will make it a focus to stop a Southern Cal offense that has endured its fair share of struggles this season. Ranking 87th in passing yards per game (207.7), USC's passing game - led by quarterback B - continues to struggle. The running game however - averaging over 200 yards per game - is what continues to keep the Trojans in ball games.
Coming off a 38-31 victory over Arizona, the Trojans (4-2, 1-0 Pac-12) are set for a South Bend showdown with a Notre Dame team that does most of their offensive damage through the air. Quarterback Tommy Rees continues to become the leader and decision-maker Brian Kelly covets at the position while receivers DaVaris Daniels, T.J. B Niklas continue to make plays downfield.
As is the case with most rivalry games, fans in attendance for the showdown under the lights and those watching from hope can certainly expect another close one between two of the biggest rivals in the sport.
