The USS Pueblo will be placed on display in North Korea on the Pothong River as part of a war museum restoration, celebrating "Victory Day" in the country. The U.S. Navy vessel was captured by North Korean forces on January 23, 1969.
North Korea celebrates the day the armistice ending the Korean War was signed as "Victory Day." North Korea considers the USS Pueblo as its most valuable and greatest prize of the Cold War. The government hopes the seized U.S. ship will serve as a symbol to its people as to how their government stood up to the United States.
North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, has made threats against the U.S. claiming North Korea would use nuclear arms to attack the mainland. This threat has often been thought of as rhetoric from a green leader eager to show his country as militarily formidable.
The story of the USS Pueblo's capture is as follows, while out in the waters close to North Korea the surveillance vessel was according to the U.S. government out conducting a routine survey in international waters.
North Korean patrol boats intercepted the Pueblo and when the American sailors attempted to escape the North Koreans fired on the USS Pueblo. The Americans knew they were about to be captured and did their best to destroy classified documents on board. Several crew members including the Captain were injured.
All 82 men on board the Pueblo were taken into custody and charged with spying. After being held in captivity, beaten and threatened with torture the Americans were finally released 11-months later, but the ship was not.
Fox News is reporting that crewmen that served on the USS Pueblo want the ship returned to the United States government. The crew members' motto regarding the Pueblo incident is "don't give up the ship." Fox is also saying the Pueblo is still listed as a commissioned Navy vessel. It is the only commissioned vessel held by a foreign nation. It is unlikely the USS Pueblo will ever return home.
