By the end of 2014, devices with Nokia branded on them will be no more. When Microsoft finishes its takeover of the company later this month, they have revealed they will change the name to Microsoft Mobile.
The impending name change is currently being sent to Nokia’s numerous suppliers.
The acquisition of Nokia from Microsoft received approval from both U.S. regulators and the European Commission early December 2013. However, in China the process took a little longer, but competition authorities there finally gave Microsoft the “ok” a couple weeks ago.
It is quite possible Microsoft will stick with Nokia’s branding seeing how the company has a multi-million fan base plus Nokia smartphones have been largely responsible for Windows Phone market share gains around the globe. But the end game for the acquisition is for Microsoft to fast-track its devices and service company.
While the Nokia name will disappear, it won’t happen overnight. Microsoft didn’t acquire the entire company, only the devices and services unit, which includes the 32,000 Nokia staff that support the design, manufacturing, and marketing of all the company’s Lumia devices.
Nokia is keeping its extensive patent portfolio and Microsoft has agreed to pay to license it.
