It would only be a matter of time before Trey Lance would be officially getting the starting quarterback nod for the San Francisco 49ers. Given the fact that Jimmy Garoppolo is coming out of offseason surgery, it appears the 21-year-old will finally get that chance.
There are informal indications that Lance will be the 49ers starting QB for the coming NFL season according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN via the Bleacher Report.
“I'm told that he's got indications, at least informal indications from the team, that he'll be the guy next year. He's set to be that. Now, whether that means that they would still keep Garoppolo and that could change the dynamic, possibly. But right now, Lance is going to be the starter," Fowler quipped.
It was always known to be the direction that San Francisco would be heading. But given that the 21-year-old is learning the ropes, the Niners needed time to get him ready.
This was the same reason believed by pundits as to why San Francisco stuck with Garoppolo. But with the two-time Super Bowl champion unlikely to start the season, Kyle Shanahan may as well give Lance a try and see if he can live up to the expectations of Bay Area fans.
As for Garoppolo, the subject of NFL trade talk, leaving San Francisco remains uncertain. Although the Carolina Panthers are reportedly interested in the 30-year-old play-caller, Garoppolo could still stay on as a backup quarterback – at least for the coming NFL season.
Such would be a plausible move for San Francisco. It could also be insured if Lance fails to meet expectations. Shanahan could always revert to Garoppolo, assuming he is healthy and stays away from other injuries which have hampered his NFL run the past seasons.
