The New York Giants have reportedly passed up the fifth-year option on quarterback Daniel Jones which could mean a couple of things after the 2022-23 NFL season.
Jones, a top pick by the Giants from the 2019 NFL Draft, could thus become a candidate to get the franchise tag. If New York does not resort to that, the 24-year-old NFL player could be among the unrestricted free agents next NFL offseason.
Regardless, the 2019 Senior Bowl MVP will be making $22.39 million this coming NFL season.
Jones was the sixth overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke. He was initially seen to be a possible quarterback of the future for the Giants. Unfortunately, the North Carolina native has struggled by failing to play consistently for New York, ESPN reported.
Also, Jones has not been spared from injuries in each of the three NFL seasons. He has missed games and has thrown just 21 touchdown passes in the past two seasons combined. However, the 24 touchdowns that Jones had as a rookie remains a career-high.
Hence, this could explain why the Giants opted not to take up the fifth-year option for Jones. New York wants to see him play consistently at a level that could justify him being tagged as the potential franchise quarterback of the team.
The coming season could be telling, meaning Jones will be under scrutiny. Depending on his performance, it could dictate what lies ahead for the 6th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.
However, the Giants did pick up the fifth-year option of defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. The 17th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft will make a guaranteed $10.8 million in 2023, per an official release from the New York Giants.
He has recorded 54 total tackles last year with five tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. In 48 games over three seasons, he has 9.0 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, and 30 QB hits.
