The New York Giants will have to ramp up their search for a willing taker for cornerback James Bradberry.
The 28-year-old player is entering the final year of his three-year $43.5 million deal with the Giants. He is set to make $13.4 million this year.
Given the amount of money owed to Bradberry, the Giants are trying to curb its finances. Unfortunately, no NFL team is willing to take in the Pro Bowler since he would be an expensive one-year rental.
The Chiefs were once linked to Bradberry but it appears the level of interest is not that serious. According to an unnamed source, Kansas City has not been involved in any talks and does not have immediate plans of pursuing any deal involving the Alabama native and wants to avoid the $13.5 million salary.
Hence if now NFL team expresses interest, the likely scenario is seeing the Giants having to keep Bradberry.
An option for the Giants is to sit down with Bradberry and discuss a possible restructuring of his contract. This would include involving future seasons.
Unfortunately, general manager Joe Schoen says he is not into such and this could place both sides in a spot. Hence, the Giants may only address the issue if the interest in the 62nd pick of the 2016 NFL Draft does not pick up, particularly this summer.
In related news, the Giants are still finding ways to take in their roster better. They have nine picks at their disposal and this could be their chance to fortify their open spots.
One name that could make sense for the Giants is Ickey Ekwonu. New York is in desperate need of a starting right tackle and Ekwonu could fit that need.
He is a smart, personable and engaging guy, someone who can transform into a pretty physical player on the field.
However, he needs to improve on certain facets of his game – including refinishing his hands in pass blocking. He could be a good addition alongside Andrew Thomas at left tackle, hopefully, enough to address the Giants' shortcomings at the position.
