Dwayne Haskins Jr.'s wife, Kalabrya Haskins, made a 911 call on April 9 — the morning of his death, saying her husband had called her from the side of the road "stuck" on a Florida highway and "had to go walk and get gas."
The NFL quarterback died after being struck by a dump truck while walking on I-595 West at the I-95 interchange outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
On the April 9 call, which was obtained by South Florida Fox Sports host Andy Slater, Dwayne's wife can be heard talking to a 911 dispatcher. According to her, Dwayne had called her from the side of the road near I-95 in Broward County, Florida. Dwayne said that he would call her back after he had finished putting gas in his vehicle.
Dwayne's wife was calling from Pittsburgh, where the couple resides, about 10 minutes after she had spoken to him on the phone. Dwayne was reportedly training with his teammates in Florida at the time he was killed. "I kept calling and kept calling," Haskins' wife can be heard telling the 911 dispatcher. "He wasn't answering. Eventually, after 10 minutes of calling the phone, eventually it cut off. It's not working now. I had his location. I just want somebody to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he's OK and if anything happened to him."
Kalabrya, who said she had her husband's location, repeatedly talked with the 911 dispatcher about exactly where he was at the time. "So, I don't want you to panic, but I am going to be honest with you," the dispatcher said. "We do have an incident on the highway, but I can't confirm if that's your husband or not."
Before the 911 call emerged, the reason why Haskins was walking on the side of the highway before his death was still uncertain. Kalabrya confirmed that the footballer "was stranded by himself and he was walking" when she last spoke to him.
Meanwhile, a separate 911 call, also acquired by Slater, featured a panicked person who reported they had witnessed the incident. "There was a man hit in front of me. I was traveling on the road and I saw a dump truck hit a man."
Dwayne and his wife got married in March 2021. Dwayne played in the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons. He also joined college football at Ohio State. Kalabrya is a former basketball player at Michigan State, and she is the sister of WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick.
