Would-be carjackers allegedly stabbed Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams early Saturday, police said.

Adams, 23, said he was standing near his truck in the city's South Side when three armed men approached him and attempted to carjack him. He did not have his keys during the incident and later told police that this caused the situation to escalate, the Associated Press reported.

The man with the gun pointed it at his face while a man with a knife stabbed him twice, once in the abdomen and once in the left forearm. The three fled after the stabbing. Adams entered a nearby restaurants to call for help.

He was transported to UPMC Mercy where he had surgery for his stab wounds. His injuries have been ruled non-life-threatening.

General Manager Kevin Colbert told MSN that he expects Adams to make a full recovery and that officials have been in contact with both Adams and his family. Police are currently searching for suspects.

Adams tweeted following the incident saying he was grateful to have survived the encounter:

He was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NHL Draft and was later named the Steelers' outstanding rookie, starting six of 10 games he played.
