With the 2022 NFL Draft approaching, teams are expected to pull off trades. And it appears this is what the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints have in mind following reports that both teams have traded multiple picks.
According to multiple reports, the Eagles will be sending the 16th, 19th, and 194th picks in this year’s draft to the Saints for the 18th, 101st, and 237th picks as well as a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick.
Despite the deal, the Eagles will still hold the rights to the no. 15 in addition to the recently acquired no. 18 pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Philadelphia will now also have extra picks with the 101st selection giving them two third-rounders this season.
Also, the deal with the Saints makes the Eagles the fifth team to acquire an extra first-round pick in the 2023 draft.
The 101st pick was something the Saints picked up through the compensatory pick process. New Orleans still has the 98th overall pick aside from two first-round selections and the 49th overall selection.
For the Saints, the acquisition of picks in the first round may be used by them to bring in a quarterback who retired after 15 seasons last year.
The Eagles may also find themselves in the same predicament next year, especially if Jalen Hurts fails to meet expectations. Hence, both teams may have the proper draft capital to address their respective needs – ironically both involve play-callers.
Ironically, the Saints also signed free agent safety Justin Evans in a separate development.
Evans was out of football action last season since he was unable to physically perform due to a toe and Achilles injury that dates back to 2018. He has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Saints.
The Bucs made Evans a second-round choice in 2017, and he started 21 games in his first two seasons before his injuries. He has 125 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups in his career.
