The NFL is considering ejection of players on roughing the passer penalties and hits on defenseless players. According to Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, team owners have discussed penalty hits being reviewable and subject to ejections. A rule change would be implemented in the offseason if it were to be approved by league executives.
“The officials have been very consistent and accurate, but they are human,” Vincent said when discussing potential reviewable hits.
Roughing-the-passer fouls have been controversial as player safety is always in conflict with the violent nature of the sport. The NFL has tried its best to protect quarterbacks, but has put defensive players at risk for injury when trying to avoid them.
