The Nexus 4 just took a price cut, which will save prospective users of the Google phone $100. The phone, which was popular since its release due to the fact that it was a good-quality phone at a decent price and required no two-year contract, will now be $200 for an 8-gigabyte model and $250 for a 16-gigabyte model. It continues to boast a lack in contract, which allows users to unlock their phones at any time and distance themselves from major carriers should they choose to do so. While $200 is standard pricing for a smartphone, its allowance to be unlocked on command can be well worth the investment as it will save money on service in the long run, Time reports.
Users can invest in plans as low as $50 or $45 a month from carriers such as T-Mobile, and can use SIM cards to save money on international costs. By using a SIM card, users can take advantage of the typically lower-cost cellular services in other countries. However, in spite of its lower price, the Nexus 4 cannot connect to the coveted 4G LTE neworks that sometimes rival even home wireless connections, which most other smartphones sold in the U.S. can do.
The announcement of this price cut comes alongside the announcement that Apple will be releasing an iPhone 5C, which is a more cost-effective version of its iPhone 5S. The new phone may be following the same pattern of Nexus phones as there is speculation that it may be offered as an unlocked, off-contract phone. Google has hinted that it will be releasing a new phone as well, the Nexus 5. It is unclear if it will be released in line with the iPhone 5S or if it will also boast a similar price cut.
