The year 2016 is just around the corner and it’s time to ring it in. Some say 2015 was a disaster, while other say it had some silver linings. No matter how you felt about the old year, it’s time to gear of for the New Year and our year-end traditions: counting down the seconds of the “ball drop” and cracking open the cham-panh-ya. The New Year’s Eve tradition of 2016 will continue on the long ball drop history.
The New Year’s Eve Ball Drop was first established in 1907, to ring in 1908, when Adolph Ochs owner of the New York Times decided to add the ball to an already impressive fireworks display in order to celebrate the building as the new and prominent headquarters of the newspaper. Beginning on December 31, 1907, the ball drop has commemorated each New Year expect in 1942 and 1943 due to wartime blackout observances.
Where To Watch: At Home
For 2016, you can catch the ball drop from the comfort of your home. Even if you live in New York -- the famed and slothful ball descends in Times Square -- it’s best to watch the spectacle from indoors. Why? 1) No public drinking allowed in NYC, with no exceptions for Jan. 1st camp-panh-ya. 2) Freezing cold for a really long time. 3) Only one camera angle. So, if you don’t live in New York, congratulations, you’re in an equally advantageous position to watch the New Year’s Eve ball drop on TV.
