Surveillance footage released on Monday showed Gabby Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie in a supermarket in Wyoming hours before she was killed, as authorities attempt to retrace the steps that led to her death.
Petito and Laundrie had been traveling across the United States and documenting their moves on social media when she was first reported missing in September 2021. Her body was subsequently found days later, and authorities believe that she was killed by her boyfriend Laundrie, who committed suicide and whose body was found in October 2021, Mirror reported.
The new footage shows Petito and Laundrie arriving in a Wyoming Whole Foods supermarket together, before making their way inside the store and spending over 15 minutes going around buying groceries, which Petito ended up putting in her tote bag, according to Fox News. After they leave the establishment, the couple sit together in their car for over 20 minutes, before the car pulls out and drives towards Highway 89, the road of which leads to the Bridger-Teton National Forest where Petito’s body was found.
Petito’s death was ruled a homicide in September when the body was found, with then-Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue saying that she was strangled to death. Laundrie allegedly killed Petito after an argument between the two at a restaurant they were eating at. After a manhunt for Laundrie due to their belief that he killed her, his body was found in a swamp park nearby in October, where authorities found a confession in his handwriting taking the responsibility for killing Petito.
“A review of the notebook revealed written statements by Mr Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms Petito’s death,” the FBI said in a statement concluding their investigation into the matter.
“I ended her life,” the note said. “I thought it was merciful, that it is what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made. I panicked. I was in shock.” He concluded that he didn’t want to live without her, and that he decided on killing himself for this reason: “From the moment I decided, took away her pain, I knew I couldn't go on without her.”
