The New Orleans Hurricanes team is a closely-knit group, doing almost anything as a family. Unfortunately, they now find themselves mourning together after one of their members, Beverly Stevenson, was fatally shot on Dec. 8.
The 26-year-old player was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle when police responded to a call at about 11:54 p.m. on Dec. 8. She was shot multiple times in the 6000 block of Music Street in Gentilly per a report obtained by People.com. She died on the spot. Stevenson leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter.
Police labeled the death of Stevenson as a homicide and no arrests have been made as of this writing. But based on the statements of several people who knew her, it would be hard to figure out how anyone would want to kill her.
“Wasn’t a troublemaker, she was the life of the party, you know," New Orleans Hurricanes Rodney Smith said.
Smith added that the untimely death of Stevenson was the second fatality they had to deal with in 2020. He mentioned how the murder of women in the city has been growing and that the need to raise awareness on this issue is a must.
“I don’t think what happened to her, she deserved that at all," Curtis Greene, owner of New Orleans Hippies women's football team said. Stevenson previously played for them per WWL.
"And there’s been a great deal, a number of killings, of women in this city so we want to try to make awareness to that."
To help authorities, the Hurricanes and the Hippies put up a $2,500 reward for tips to any information on the assailants.
A GoFundMe post was also put up to take in donations to aid the family of Stevenson, particularly her beautiful nine-year-old daughter.
"Prayers for the loss of football sister, Brittany Stevenson," a post on the Facebook page of the Midwest Mountain Lions read. "Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, and her football family, the New Orleans Hurricanes Women's Pro Football Team. #wfa #onebigfamily #footballsisters #footballisfemale."
