With the final season of the Bowl Championship Series coming this season, college football fans will be introduced to a new system that involves a playoff format.

Beginning after the 2014 regular season, ESPN is reporting that the new name for the four-team playoff will simply be referred to as College Football Playoff. The new layout will be used in college football for 12 seasons, starting in 2014 and many of the popular, well-known bowls will still be involved in the tournament process.

ESPN also reports that big time bowls the Fiesta, Cotton and Chick-fil-A bowls along with the Sugar, Rose and Orange bowls will be used in the six-bowl semifinal rotation.

The official release of the new playoff name will be announced tonight from the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California.

Always involved with anything concerning fans and money, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was able to land what will be the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. That game according to ESPN will be played on January 12, 2015.

This is certainly an exciting time for college football fans everywhere.

The constant debate between football fans and the current BCS format was whether or not the proper or most deserving teams were being selected to play in the National Championship game.

Before falling 42-14 to Alabama in last season's title game, Notre Dame was the consensus No. 1 team in the rankings and therefore should have gone because of their perfect season and because of their difficult schedule.

Debates arose around the college football world concerning whether Alabama or Oregon should be the Irish's opponent in the title game because both had only one loss.

The Crimson Tide suffered their only loss in 2012 to Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M while Oregon was defeated by Stanford in overtime. Alabama proved its worth in the championship, dismantling Notre Dame and claiming their third championship in four seasons. Now, suffering one loss does not mean an end to a team's title hopes because they'll have the opportunity to remain among the top-ranked teams in the country and possibly get into a playoff.

While the new format will certainly be a lot different from the current BCS formula used for selecting bowl games and National Championship matchups, the idea of finally embracing a playoff system can only help a wider array of teams moving forward.

It's a new formula so there will certainly be bumps in the road, but I like where the game itself is headed. Kudos to those involved in getting this done.
