Police have responded to a call saying that there were shots fired at Sparks Middle School in Reno, Nevada. The incident occurred Monday morning. Reports are saying multiple people have been shot. There is still mixed reports coming in, but there is no word on the number of people who have been shot. Names and ages as well as the condition of those who have been injured have not been released. According to USA Today, there is an account of a 12-year-old boy who has been shot. Reports say the boy was shot as classes began on Monday.
Students from the middle school and nearby elementary school had been evacuated and sent to Spark High School. Sparks Middle School was placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect. CNN is reporting that the suspect in the middle school shooting has been "neutralized." There have been no reports as to what police may mean when saying "neutralized." It is unknown if the shooter has been killed or simply taken into custody. The Sparks school shooting comes almost a year after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School and a month after the D.C. Navy yard shooting.
Parents have been informed that their children have been taken to Sparks High School and may pick them up there. With yet another shooting involving children the gun debate is sure to heat up again. President Obama has tried to work with Congress in order to institute an assault rifles ban as well as implement stricter background checks for those looking to buy guns. Obama worked with the parents and family members of students and teachers of those killed at Sandy Hook in order to persuade Congress to pass the gun laws.
While speaking at a memorial service for those who were killed during the September Navy Yard shooting President Obama called for a "transformation" of the gun laws in the United States. "Our tears are not enough," Obama said during the memorial. "Our words and our prayers are not enough...We are going to have to change." No doubt this latest mass shooting will spark the President's return to the gun debate and his goal of ending mass shootings in the United States. NBC has reported that authorities in Nevada are planning to hold a press conference later in the day regarding today's school shooting.
