The Golden State Warriors own the rights to the second overall pick, something they could use on one of the top three players in the 2020 NBA Draft. Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman are this year’s top bets but none may make sense for the Dubs.
Edwards is the name closely associated with the Warriors. But the reason behind their interest is that the 19-year-old is one of the best talents that would be too hard to pass up. But as far as fitting him in the rotation, not most are convinced he can last. With Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson still around, there is a big possibility that he may eventually be traded.
The next best prospect for the Warriors is James Wiseman. In need of a big man who can play defense, the 7-foot-1 would have been perfect. But the fact that he needs work raises questions on whether he can blossom in the Bay Area. He needs time to develop and that is something the Dubs may not be willing to do for now.
There are other names to consider in this year’s draft class. And based on reports from The Athletic, it appears Dani Avdija has made quite an impression. The Israeli cager worked out in Atlanta recently and made a good account of himself. But the Warriors were reportedly even more awed by the 19-year-old when they sat down and talked with him. Could the Dubs possibly use their pick to make him the second-overall selection for the 2020 NBA Draft?
If the Warriors want him over the rest, that would be the safest route. But if Golden State wants to gamble a bit and look at the mock drafts, they could trade down to the fourth overall spot and get some added assets. The fourth selection belongs to the Chicago Bulls and it is no secret that they have their eyes on Edwards.
But all this is with the assumption that Edwards, Ball and Wiseman all go as the top three picks as forecasted. If the Minnesota Timberwolves, Bulls and Charlotte Hornets opt for someone else then the Dubs may end up in the same predicament and left to choose from the three top names.
