Anthony Davis will be out for at least four weeks, a bad development considering the struggle the Los Angeles Lakers are dealing with.
But the good news is that the All-Star center suffered only an MCL sprain. However, head coach Frank Vogel needs to come up with something, make the adjustments to take some load off Davis and also LeBron James.
The Lakers have been overly reliant on James and Davis, something that many feared since last season. Both players have been hit by different injuries but nothing that would be a cause for concern – at least for now.
"I had to take a break. ... I did hear something pop—and the first thing I thought of was [a major injury]. Which, I was emotional, I was just like everywhere. But like I said, thank God that it wasn't that,” Davis said after admitting he reached a point where he could not walk.
Even if Davis were to return, the Lakers would be putting him in a tricky situation if Vogel continues to rely on him heavily. But with the need to win games, it is a likely scenario.
Considering the Lakers have a talented roster, it may be time to turn to other players. In the case of Davis, Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan could help if they are given the chance by the Lakers coaching thrust.
Both have hardly made an impact with Vogel relying too much on Davis. Also, it may be in the Lakers' best interest to just trade them away for a player they feel would be of better use than having them sit on the bench.
The same case holds for James who has been overworking himself. He may be holding up fine now, but the story could be different in the postseason.
As things stand now, the Lakers are in a bind. Unless players like Russell Westbrook can step up big time, the Lakers season, and NBA title aspirations, are not looking so good.
