The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be favorites for the 2020-21 NBA season anew with LeBron James and Anthony David still around. Danny Green believes it though it also hinges on who the team has to play for the coming season.
Speaking to Forbes, Green was pretty confident that the Lakers can make it back-to-back NBA titles. However, he admits that it won’t be easy for a lot of players for the 2019-20 squad to become free agents.
“For sure, I think we can definitely get one more for sure,” Green said in a phone interview… “It’s going to be tough because we have so many free agents, with 10 guys that are free agents. Trying to bring everybody back and reconstruct the contracts, it’s going to be difficult, but when you have the nucleus of LeBron and AD — if they bring back AD — that’s pretty much what you need. You don’t need much else around them.”
Curiously, Davis is one of those free agents. However according to sources, even if the 27-year-old opts out, he will re-sign with the purple and gold in what is expected to be a lofty contract for the coming NBA season, The Athletic reported.
Aside from James and Green, other players under contract for the next NBA season include Kyle Kuzma, Alex Caruso and Talen Horton-Tucker. Players who have a player option and could opt out include Avery Bradley, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo.
Of that list of players, Rondo and Caldwell-Pope are allegedly contemplating opting out to test free agency. Players already out of contract include Dwight Howard and Markieff Morris.
There remains no official word on who the Lakers will bring back next season. Rondo, Caldwell-Pope and Howard could be brought back though it depends on how much budget the Lakers have available.
James and Davis have eaten up much of the salary space of the Lakers, making it difficult for them to band together big names for the 2020-21 season. Among the names linked to the club include Chris Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers.
Another name in the mix is Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards. The 27-year-old raised speculations when he purchased a lofty pad in Los Angeles with wife Kamiah Adams worth roughly $6.8 million. Much of this was covered in a previous post.
