When he first entered the league in 2016, Brandon Ingram was considered a potential second coming of 2014 NBA MVP Kevin Durant. Although it took him time to develop, the 24-year-old is slowly living up to that billing.
As things stand right now, the 6-foot-8 cager has established himself as a star since moving to the New Orleans Pelicans from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019. He earned his first All-Star nod in 2019 and was adjudged the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2020.
Since then, it is hardly surprising that the Pelicans are not interested in moving the former Duke Blue Devil. However, New Orleans may have something to think of with reports that the Brooklyn Nets are inquiring about a potential deal involving the native of North Carolina, NBA Insider Brandon Robinson tweeted.
But the deal that could happen is not a straight-up trade. It would involve Larry Nance and future draft picks. It remains to be seen how the two NBA teams would work to make this trade happen.
There are things to consider. Although Durant has proven his stock, his age is something that needs pondering. At 34 and with the frequency of injuries the 12-time All-Star has been incurring, it is a risky investment to take in Durant at this stage although their fortunes could drastically change.
As for Ingram, the Pelicans just have to surround him with the right people to get their campaigns rolling. Zion Williamson is there, giving the Pels a lethal combo that could pull off some surprises.
A void in other positions is what New Orleans needs to address. Their backcourt has not been that efficient, meaning it would be in their best interest to take in a veteran guard who can hold things together.
Given these scenarios, seeing a Kevin Durant trade to the New Orleans Pelicans for Brandon Ingram, Larry Nance and picks hardly looks promising.
For his part, Durant is aware that his playing years are numbered, meaning he may prefer to move to a team that is capable of winning an NBA title now.
