In an unexpected move, the Milwaukee Bucks have traded Michael Carter-Williams to the Chicago Bulls just one week before the regular season is set to begin.
In exchange, the Bucks received 24-year-old Tony Snell.
Carter-Williams has two years remaining on his contract, however next year has a qualifying offer sheet worth $4.3 million. Carter-Williams is a former No. 11 overall draft pick, but many don’t believe he has lived up to his full potential in the NBA. His scoring average has declined every season, and injuries have been a concern since winning Rookie of the Year in 2014.
Still, Carter-Williams could be a good addition in the Windy City. The Chicago Bulls did in fact add Rajon Rondo this offseason, so Carter-Williams will simply have to come off the bench or adjust his game more.
Carter-Williams was originally drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers, but after just a season and a half, he was traded to the Bucks in a three team deal involving the Phoenix Suns. It will be interesting to see how Carter-Williams and Dwyane Wade gel on the court with one another.
As for Snell, he too is a former 2013 first round draft pick. Snell has played his entire three year career on the Chicago Bulls, and it’s safe to say that he didn’t impress Chicago fans. Snell has a career field goal percentage of less than 40 percent and he’s never started more than 35 games in a season. Just last season Snell was removed from the Bulls’ starting lineup for lack of production.
There’s a good chance that both Snell and Carter-Williams will be on different squads sooner rather than later. The 2016-17 NBA season officially tips off on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
