In a move to attract attention to NBA games on Christmas day (as well as to market new NBA merchandise), the league - home to superstars like LeBron James & Kobe Bryant - is having NBA Teams don solid color uniforms during today's special holiday matches.
Such was the case with the Lakers who wore solid white jerseys and shorts and the Knicks whose passionate orange may have caused some eyesore among the spectators during a game won by the L.A. 100-94.
Kobe Bryant and his Lakers looked pretty normal in white as it is a color the team frequents, but the orange the Knicks wore kept reminding of the Dutch national soccer team uniform for one reason or another.
At first, the uniforms 'wowed' the crowd as the sight of seeing Carmelo in a live orange or Dwight Howard in all-white apparel was an unusual sight, but one quarter was all it took for this writer to get used to the special uniforms which by then had lost much, if not all, of its charm. By half-time, the uniforms had become simple and dull as opposed to what the NBA may have intended for the uniform: rare and elegant.
This writer cannot say the same for the uniforms used in the Celtics-Nets or Heat-Thunder game since the uniforms used in these games better-resembled original uniforms. In the end, however, the verdict: original uniforms are more fun to watch.
The NBA introduced these Christmas Days uniforms back in November and has since then marketed them. Knicks fans have all the reason to love and purchase the orange jersey as it should become an interesting item to add to the piles of memorabilia, but for this NBA fan, the donning of the solid color uniforms was in the end an interesting experiment.
All 10 teams playing on Christmas Day 2012 are using such uniforms.
