The Mexican Attorney General's office has confirmed that the man killed by Mexican Marines in Acapatzingan, Michoacan on Sunday was indeed Nazario Moreno Gonzalez. Known variously as "El Mas Loco," "El Macho Loco," "El Chayo" and "El Doctor," Moreno was a former leader of La Familia Michoacana and, later, the Knights Templar cartel. Moreno was taken down following a joint operation between Mexican police forces and vigilante groups in the area.

Nazario "El Chayo" Moreno was supposedly killed in 2010, leading to the disbandment of the Familia Michoacana Cartel. However, following the 2011 arrest of Mario Buenrostro Quiroz, this Mexican drug dealer claimed that Moreno was still alive. Indeed, on the 19th of February this year, Manuel Mondragón y Kalb, the head of Mexico' National Security Commission (CNS) confirmed that authorities could not confirm if indeed Moreno had been killed in 2010.

"El Chayo" was apparently a key leader of the Knights Templar, despite officially being dead. The Attorney General's Office (PGR) confirmed that, while DNA tests had not been undertaken, "everything seems to indicate, with about a 98 percent certainty, that this is the man," said the PGR's director. Mr. Moreno has been reportedly spotted numeorous times in the past four years since his supposed death. His death comes as yet another success for Enrique Peña Nieto.
