Hurricane Sandy has caused havoc in the Caribbean, killing at least 21 people in its path.

According to forecast, the hurricane is headed to the U.S. East Coast and could be here as early as this weekend.

Sandy is strong, with the latest readings showing that it has maximum sustained winds of up to 90 mph.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Sandy is a Category one hurricane and could weaken in the next 48 hours. However, it is expected to remain a hurricane for the next couple of days.

According to the Weather Channel, New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia residents should "remain vigilant and be prepared to take action in the next few days."

The Hurricane Center said watched and warning will likely be required for portions of the North Eastern Coast early Friday morning.

Florida is currently feeling tropical storm conditions and should expect those to last for the next 36 hours. Most of the state's coast is under a tropical storm warning.

"A very complicated situation is going on right now," Gary Best, a meteorologist for Hometown Forecast Services Inc. in Nashua, New Hampshire told BloombergBusinessWeek. "As it moves across the western Atlantic, it is going to encounter a dip in the jet stream. There will be a lot of energy coming in from the West and it may try to capture the storm and pull it into the U.S. coastline."

According to NHC, at 11 p.m., hurricane force winds extend up to 35 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 230 miles.

Sandy is expected to cause life-threatening flash flood and mudslides and produces up to 20 inches of rainfall.
