National Boss's Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada on October 16 or the closest business day. It is a day for employees to thank their bosses for all their hard work and kindness throughout the work year. The origin of National Boss's Day goes back to the year 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski registered the day with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
At the time, Ms. Haroski was an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Illinois and she chose this day because it was her father's birthday, who was also her boss. With this day, Haroski hoped that the relationship between supervisors and employess improved to promote a better work environment for everyone. In 1962, four years later, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner officially proclaimed the day as such and it has been celebrated ever since.
The holiday is also observed in countries like Australia, India and South Africa. Hallmark started selling cards in relation to this holiday in 1979 and offers more than 50 National Boss Day cards. The card line ranges in tone from formal to humorous and the new cards have messages that are more authentic and "true to life," with designs featuring more illustrations and photography.
