Elon Musk was asked about the status of $5,000 stimulus checks he promised Americans in February during a Q&A session at a rally in Wisconsin on Sunday.
Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claimed it has saved $130 billion, and, last month, President Donald Trump said Americans will reap the benefit of the alleged savings in the form of a $5,000 "DOGE dividend," USA Today reported.
Despite the president's promise, Musk stumbled through an ambiguous response.
"Well, I guess we need to be successful at scale," Musk started. "We've made a lot of progress, but there's still a tremendous amount of work to do."
"Effectively, by, as government spending is made more efficient and spending is reduced, the tax by inflation is reduced," he continued. "So, one way or another, you will effectively be better off, if resources in the United States are not wasted."
He then shifted responsibility for getting the checks to Americans to Congress and Trump.
"It's somewhat up to the Congress and maybe the president to, you know, as to whether specific checks are cut, but, but whether a check is cut or not, if you reduce wasteful spending the, the economy is going to be better off," Musk stated.
@usatoday So, will taxpayers ever receive #DOGE stimulus checks? #ElonMusk admits they will be subject to congressional approval or President Donald Trump's sign-off.

A clip of the exchange went viral after it was shared by USA Today on Monday, with users mocking Musk for his non-answer.
"Santa Claus and the tooth fairy will bring the checks," one user wrote.
"There is no money coming home! Hope that helps 💙" another added.
Others wondered whether DOGE is saving as much money as Musk claims.
"DOGE hasn't "found" any money. If there was fraud where are the indictments?" a third TikTok user prompted.
