The White House called a last-minute audible on Monday evening, deciding to postpone that night's taping of "Música Latina: In Performance at the White House", which was set to convene a host of Latin musical performers, in light of the Navy Yard shooting occurring on Monday morning. "In light of the September 16 tragic events at the Washington Navy Yard and out of respect for the victims and their families, Musica Latina was postponed to a new date," read an update on the White House's website about an hour and a half before the event was scheduled to kick off. A new date has not yet been announced for the event, at which Gloria Estefan, Prince Royce, Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin, Marco Antonio Solis and Arturo Sandoval were all slated to perform.
First lady Michelle Obama, who appeared earlier on Monday at a pre-concert workshop, "Celebrando el Ritmo Latino: The History of Latin Music", for middle and high school students from the Washington, D.C. area, had said her husband was looking forward to dancing at that night's performances, which were being held to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. "You can't help but move to the music," the first lady said. "Even the president, you will see tonight, will shake his groove thing every now and then." But the festivities would have to be put on hold for the time being.
13 people died in Washington, D.C. on Monday after 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, an employee at a defense contractor for the Marines, entered the capital's Navy Yard using his pass and went on a shooting rampage, killing twelve people before Alexis himself was killed by police. "We are confronting yet another mass shooting," President Obama said on Monday in remarks which were intended to concern the financial crisis, according to CBS. "And today it happened on a military installation in our nation's capital." Hundreds of Navy workers were told to stay inside their offices, and the US Senate temporarily locked down all of its buildings, according to USA Today. The names of seven of the twelve victims were released on Monday night: Michael Arnold, 59; Sylvia Frasier, 53; Kathy Gaarde, 62; John Roger Johnson, 73; Frank Kohler, 50; Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46; Vishnu Pandit, 61.
This "In Performance at the White House" will be the 12th installment in the series, which has been produced by D.C. PBS stations since 1978. President Obama previously hosted Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Carol King, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, among others, for other episodes of the musical event.
