With Mixed Martial Arts continuing to grow in popularity due to the success of superstar athletes John Jones, Cain Velasquez, Anthony 'Showtime' Pettis, Vitaly Minakov and others, MMA in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator arenas serves as one of the most entertaining elements in sports. The increased demand for a sport that has risen across the globe recently sparked the interest of mun2, a Hispanic cable network owned by NBCUniversal that broadcasts programs aimed directly to the young Latino audience, and mixed martial arts certainly falls into that category.
Thanks to the growing popularity of the sport, mun2 recently announced plans to launch a 10-part competition reality series entitled 'Combate Americas,' the first Spanish language Mixed Martial Arts competition series of its kind. Behind the driving force of Bunim/Murray Productions, Latin music partners Chino & Nacho and MMA journalist Andrea Calle will host each of the one-hour long shows, which focus on 10 professional Hispanic MMA fighters competing to win a place in the Combate Americas franchise. SiriusXM host Piolin will serve as the color commentator while singer, songwriter and recording artist Daddy Yankee becomes Combate Americas first commissioner.
Excited about this tremendous new outlet in the world of MMA, show creator Campbell McLaren, the co-founder of UFC and CEO of Combate Americas said recently that the driving force behind the series will be the hard work and talent each of the best Hispanic fighters brings to the table. "Combate Americas is the most exciting addition to MMA since the beginnings of the UFC 20 years ago," McLaren said. "It was specifically created to present the best new Hispanic fighters and to introduce a whole new audience to this highly entertaining sport."
Executive Vice President and General Manager of mun2 Diana Mogollon said that the brand new series will be the perfect way to give viewers a deeper look into the MMA world, with more of a focus on some of the new Hispanic fighters hoping to stake their claim in the industry.
"mun2 is excited to continue to offer our viewers a look inside the sport of MMA," Mogollon said. "No one has followed the world of Hispanic fighters through the process of making it into an MMA franchise, and we're proud to be the first with this series from BMP Latin and Combate Americas. It's an exciting series, with amazing stories of the challenges, struggle and victories that each fighter has endured to make it into la Jaula (the Cage)."
Currently in production in Miami, the series is set to air in 2014.
