Disney dropped the teaser of the live-action adaptation of the Chinese legend, "Mulan" in July. While the teaser grabbed positive feedbacks from the fans, the upcoming Disney remake of the 1998 animation might disappoint the fans.
Earlier, a report surfaced that the new version of "Mulan" will exclude Mulan’s love interest, Li Shang. As per Radio Times, the recent reports reveal that a non-speaking Phoenix character has replaced even the character of Mushu. However, the major blow for the fans came as the Disney classic decided to replace the original songs with instrumental.
Although the film might feature some of the original music from the animated version, none of the songs will be sung by the actors. The film faced severe backlash after its lead actress, Liu Yifei, expressed her support for the Hong Kong police on a popular Chinese social channel. There were calls to boycott the film, as the protestors shamed her as anti-democratic for supporting the police brutality.
Recently, the film has faced another roadblock, as Mulan has been accused of historical inaccuracies. To reconstruct some of the “significant battle sequences,” Mulan is currently gearing up for a major reshoot. The film will undergo about four months of extensive reshoots, which starts from this month and is expected to be wrapped up by February, before its release in March 2020. Further details of the remake have been kept under the wraps.
With an estimated budget of $290 to $300 million, Disney’s Mulan is one of the most expensive films of all time. The film has been delayed from its original release date in November 2018, and is all set to hit the theaters on March 27, 2020.
The plot of "Mulan" revolves around a young Chinese woman who decides to replace her father’s spot in the Chinese military, under a patriarchal regime. She impersonates a man to go to war since she was not qualified to serve the military as a female. Accompanied by Mushu, her dragon, Mulan sets off on an exciting and dangerous venture. Her love interest was Li Shang, who played a dashing captain.
