Motorcyclist Dies After Striking Police Officer Who Ran a Red Light. Officer Charged With Misdemeanor Moving Violation

A Detroit police officer faces a misdemeanor charge after reportedly running a red light and causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Roseville, Michigan.

Corey Siquan Jones, 28, allegedly ran a red light while off-duty on August 16, 2024, leading to a collision with 27-year-old Evan Newman, who had the right of way. Newman died at the scene, CBS Detroit reported.

Investigators with Roseville police reviewed the case, and on February 12, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Jones with a moving violation causing death, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

"Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, but they are also bound by it. No one is above the law, and our justice system must apply equally to all," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in a statement obtained by FOX 2.

Jones appeared in Roseville District Court for arraignment and was released on a $5,000 bond. His probable cause conference is set for March 5.
