A "resented" mother who left a bottle of bleach open with a straw in it, hoping her three-year-old son would drink it has been arrested and is facing charges of child cruelty.
The mother reported to be in her 20’s from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, appeared at court for the child abuse charges, including an incident where she left a bottle of bleach out in the open with a straw in it for her son to drink.
The incident came to light after the woman took her son to her boyfriend’s house. The man’s elderly mother noticed injuries on the child’s body and questioned the woman.
The suspect told the woman that the child had fallen and also that she was guilty of "nothing but not watching him".
The elderly woman who was not convinced by the suspect’s answer alerted social services and social workers about the alleged abuse. They visited the child’s house the next day and inspected the boy's condition.
They "had never seen anything so bad", the court heard. Doctors who examined the child were shocked to find 80 bruises on his head and body,
The woman, whose name has not been released by the authorities to safeguard the identity of the toddler, denied the abuse initially. She even tried to blame her boyfriend for it, the court heard.
However, the suspect later confessed to the abuse. She also told police that she had kept a window open and had laid out some ladders in the hope the infant would climb out.
The woman told the police that she committed the crime because she "hated being a mother" and also that she had to put him before anyone else.
The boy has since been placed in a "secure safe environment". The child was reported to be doing well, the court heard.
The mother pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty and was handed a two-year suspended sentence.
