Puerto Rico's largest newspaper has issued a strong endorsement for Kamala Harris, telling residents they "must vote" against Donald Trump following derogatory comments made about the island at a recent MAGA rally.

The endorsement from El Nuevo Día comes in the wake of a controversial remark by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a recent Trump rally, which reignited long standing grievances about Trump's treatment of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, Politico reported.

"Kamala Harris presents a government program that promises progress and well-being for the American people," the paper's editor, María Luisa Ferré Rangel, wrote. "Her inclusive discourse ensures solid leadership for the world's leading power."

The paper's strong endorsement for Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of Puerto Ricans in battleground states like Pennsylvania, where their votes could significantly influence the upcoming election.

The endorsement is the second ever for a presidential candidate from the paper after backing President Joe Biden in 2020. It's expected to mobilize the Puerto Rican diaspora, with calls for them to vote and hold Trump accountable.

"Let's not forget the paper towels he threw at us while we suffered without electricity for months, and let's not forget that the funds did not arrive because Trump ― through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development ― told them to stop because he considered Puerto Ricans 'bums who live begging,'" Rangel wrote. "It is cowardly to insult those who cannot defend themselves."
