"Mentiras," a successful Mexican musical is expected to go to Broadway next year, which would be the first step towards having a constant Mexican presence in the world's largest entertainment center, said producer Morris Gilbert. "It would be a watershed. It's a dream we are looking for. If we've taken all the musicals from New York to Mexico, why not now bring music from Mexico to New York? It should be as difficult or as easy as doing it the other way around"said Gilbert.
In an interview after participating in a panel organized by the Mexico-United States Chamber of Commerce, the producer said the success of "Mentiras" in Mexico, as well as versions in Colombia and Peru, suggests that the work has international potential. "We intend to bring it to not only New York, but to all Latin American markets, including Miami and Chicago. The huge success it has had in Mexico, with over 900 thousand performances, makes us have faith in the potential it has in for the rest of the world ," he said .
"Mentiras" is set to debut in New York in a large-scale musical format, "if they let us," says Gilbert. He describes the musical as "the story of the soul of our country " and that it will premiere once more next week at the legendary Teatro Blanquita of Mexico City. "We believe this is a musical that can be exported to both U.S. and the rest of the world as the great Mexican musical. So , we have ambitious plans but why not set your goals high in life?"
