We may not see the usual antics we’ve come to know from CNN this New Year's.
Variety reported that CNN correspondents and anchors will be banned from drinking on or off camera during their “New Year’s Eve Live” show.
Reportedly during a meeting, CNN Chairmen and CEO Chris Licht told employees that drinking on camera dampened CNN’s credibility and damaged the “respectability” viewers would enjoy seeing from their correspondents. This is Licht’s first New Year’s special as CEO of the company.
This comes after a few viral and infamous moments occurred during the CNN’s show in recent years. On New Year’s Eve 2016, Journalist and CNN Host Don Lemon pierced his ears live on TV.
When CNN brought in the new year last year, Lemon, who appeared to be somewhat tipsy, went on a rant referring to himself as a “grown-a– man.”
He went on to say that he was “able to share my point of view on television and it freaks people out and you know what,” he said. “You can kiss my behind, I do not care. I don’t care.”
In the same year, while co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s special with Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen threw shade at Ryan Seacrest, who has been hosting ABC's “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” for the past 16 years.
"If you look behind me, you'll see Ryan Seacrest's group of losers performing,” said Cohen. “I'm sorry but if you're watching ABC, you're watching nothing."
Cohen later admitted to being “a bit overserved” and regretted calling out Seacrest.
We can still reportedly expect to see a drink in the hands of Cooper and Cohen during primetime hours, but other anchors and correspondents will not be allowed to partake.
Cohen actually said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that he will party even harder this year for the correspondents who cannot drink.
“My job is to take Anderson out of his comfort zone [and] my job is to be a party ringleader for everyone watching us on New Year’s Eve,” said Cohen. “And that is what I will continue to do. And as a matter of fact, if the correspondents are not drinking this year, I will be partying even harder on their behalf.”
