An Indian mother attempted to end her life twice allegedly after smothering her 13-month-old daughter to death with a pillow, police said.
The first suicide attempt was on Saturday (Aug. 6) morning, when the 38-year-old woman was at her home in Vasco, Goa, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Kumar told the Times of India.
The mother, who is yet to be identified, tried to kill herself by slashing her wrist first.
When she realized the injury wasn’t life-threatening, she drove a few miles away from her home to the Zuari River and jumped off the bridge, police said.
She was, however, rescued by the coast guards and rushed to the Goa Medical College, where she is currently undergoing treatment, according to reports.
The hospital authorities alerted the police, who then informed the woman’s father about the suicide attempt.
That’s when the woman’s father rushed to their first-floor home and found his 13-month-old granddaughter lying unresponsive on the bed. The infant was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
An autopsy was conducted and the results revealed the cause of death to be “due to the compression of the nostrils and mouth by a pillow-like substance, and pressure on the nerves of the small child,” Vasco Police Inspector, Kapil Nayak told TOI.
Police said the woman had been battling depression ever since she returned from Germany, where her husband works. They are yet to record her statement, reports said.
“The husband reached Goa on Sunday morning but is not yet in a condition to give any statement to the police. We are investigating the case from all possible angles,” Nayak said.
The mother has been booked for murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as relevant provisions of the Goa Children’s Act.
In another incident, a 36-year-old Connecticut mom took her own life after strangling her three children to death in a horrifying murder-suicide that shocked the friendly neighborhood in Danbury.
Sonia Loja and her three kids, 12-year-old Junior Panjon, 10-year-old Joselyn Panjon, and 5-year-old Jonael Panjon were found dead in the family’s Whaley Street home on July 27.
The shocking discovery was made by the husband and father, Pedro Panjon when he returned home from work that evening.
Pedro realized something was off as soon as he arrived at the front door on that fateful day. He rushed inside to the kitchen and spotted the two-page suicide note that his wife had left for him.
Pedro then ran to a bedroom, where he found his son, Junior Panjon, on the floor and daughter, Joselyn on the bed — both with electrical cords around their necks.
The youngest boy, Jonael was found in another room, also with a cord wrapped around his neck, the cousin said.
Pedro couldn’t find his wife, so he called the police before going out to the yard and collapsing to the ground.
Loja was found hanging in the backyard shed — turned day-care which was under the authorities' radar and forced to shut down after being deemed illegal.
It was later reported that Loja had long battled depression and had been crying for days before deciding to take the extreme step.
