With a cloud of doubt on what the future holds for the Los Angeles Angels, it comes as no surprise that Shohei Ohtani could be a key player that other MLB teams would covet. And one team that could make a play for the 28-year-old pitcher is the Chicago Cubs.
Considered one of the most electrifying players in major league baseball right now, Ohtani could be a huge upgrade for any MLB team.
For the Angels, nothing close to that has happened. Los Angeles is likely to miss the playoffs this year, a similar predicament that the Chicago Cubs are facing.
Looking ahead, the Angels are staring at a transitionary period. Team owner Arte Moreno is reportedly open to selling the team, largely because the team has hardly performed well during his term. Since 2009, the Angels have appeared in only one playoff game.
Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, appearing on “The Parkins & Spiegel Show” bats that it would not surprise him if the Angels end up sending Ohtani to the Cubs soon.
An obvious reason behind a possible Ohtani trade is money. Should Moreno be serious about selling the team, the first thing that comes to mind is recouping as much money as he can.
The Cubs could take their chances. But it should be noted that the same could be going on in the minds of other MLB teams. Hence, the best offer is likely to win, especially the MLB team that can offer big money to the Angels.
However, there is another twist to the Ohtani story. He is under team control until the end of the 2023 MLB season but is set to hit free agency in 2024.
So if the Cubs or some other MLB team succeeds in getting the 2016 Japan Series champion, keeping him will be another issue that needs to be addressed.
