Though many of the top free agents on the market have already signed with new clubs, the 2013 Major League Baseball free agency period continues to hold a high level of interest across the game's wide spectrum. Large names including Shin-Soo Choo (Rangers), Robinson Canó (Mariners), Brian McCann (Yankees), Curtis Granderson (Mets) and Jacoby Ellsbury (Yankees) have all solidified their immediate futures in fresh markets, but some of the other highly regarded players such as relief pitcher Grant Balfour, first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales and starters Matt Garza and Johan Santana remain available for signing, creating consistent interest in free agency for both fans and organizations.
Another coveted free agent this offseason is shortstop Stephen Drew, who recently helped the Boston Red Sox claim their third World Series championship in 10 seasons. A well-above average defensive player, the 30-year-old will become a great addition to the team that eventually signs him. The best available shortstop on the open market, Drew is coming off a season in which he batted .253 in 124 games with 13 home runs and 67 RBI. Though he's battled injuries in the past -- appearing in a total of only 165 in the two seasons prior to last season's mark of 124 -- Drew sits as a prized possession and according to multiple sources, both the New York Mets and New York Yankees remain interested in his services.
MLB Network reporter Peter Gammons noted recently that Drew is awaiting further clarity from the Yankees before making a decision on his MLB future. Though New York re-inked shortstop Brendan Ryan as solid insurance should Derek Jeter go down with injury again, the Yankees' only other infield assets up the middle include Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts, with both signing during the current offseason. There is a possibility that Drew could spend some time at second base if he signs with the Yankees and even though there appears to be interest on both sides, no concrete evidence has cited that both sides are nearing terms of a deal. Eduardo Nunez -- if healthy -- could also work his way onto the Yankees roster since he can play third base and shortstop.
Along with the Yankees, the cross-town rival Mets are also showing interest in the shortstop. Current Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada has been a disappointment the past few seasons and with the recent signing of Curtis Granderson completed to add power to the line-up, New York would love to see Drew anchor the left side of the infield alongside third baseman David Wright. The Mets also have needs in the pitching department and at first base but with shortstop sitting as a need, many believe the New York Mets are still in play for the World Series champion Drew.
