Mitsubishi Evo X
Mitsubishi Evo X Mitsubishi

When the Mitsubishi Evo X was first released in 2008, it was more of a revolution than an evolution. Gone was the ricer image when the Evo X offered a new sequential six speed twin-clutch transmission with steering-mounted magnesium alloy shift paddles rather than only a manual gearbox. The spoiler was no longer as high either. In fact, the 2010 Evo MR-Touring offered leather, moonroof, better sound insulation, and a tasteful lip spoiler to make the car much more grown up. On paper, it could have passed as a Japanese Audi S4. handful

Even when the Mitsubishi model range didn't perform very well in sales, the Evo X had always maintained a high regard from the public as Mitsubishi's halo performance vehicle. According to Mitsubishi UK managing director Lance Bradley during a conversation with Autocar, "The UK is an exceptionally important market for the Evo. In our peak year, we sold 1400 units."

The Mitsubishi Evo X certainly enjoyed a good run but all good things must come to an end-- the Evo X will officially discontinue from the UK market once the very last 10 units in stock have been sold. Due to the strengthening yen, Evo X imports to the UK have ceased.

Lance Bradley said, "We used to sell the Evo for £30k; now we would have to charge £60k."

Mitsubishi has played with everything within feasibility and even some that are beyond, including importing Evo X vehicles into the UK at zero profit margin. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

However, don't feel lousy just yet. Closing the door on the Evo X opens a new one for the succeeding Evo XI. To the industry's knowledge, Mitsubishi is prepared to launch the next-generation standard Lancer for 2014. However, Mitsubishi has yet to confirm any details on its Evo developments.

Thus far, rumors have not only suggested a hybrid drivetrain, but some speculators even suggested that the next-generation Evo may forgo the revvy turbocharged petro engine for a diesel powerplant instead. Stay tuned as we find out more on the Evo XI in the near future.
